ELLIS PAUL

Ellis Paul's songwriting credentials are unassailable. They are as genuine as the fifteen Boston Music Awards he has earned, as indelible as the tattoo of Woody Guthrie that adorns his arm, and as authentic as the musical roots he draws upon with every note he plays. He emerged out of the Boston music scene during a time when contemporary folk was beginning to come into the mainstream. Now, with 20+ years of playing 150 to 200 shows annually, 19 record releases, a documentary film, a book of poems/short stories, an award winning children's book project, as well as songs featured on Hollywood soundtracks, he makes Boston's music scene proud and tonight we welcome him home to Maine. Visit ellispaul.com to hear his music if you need any convincing on why you should come to the show! The show begins at 7:30 PM. Doors for seating open at 7:00 PM. Advance tickets $18. CHRISTINE LAVIN & DON WHITE - ON THE FUNNY SIDE OF THE STREET

Seeing Christine Lavin or Don White is a treat. Seeing Christine Lavin and Don White is an experience. Between the two of them, they have more than 40 years of combined experience making music and laughter. Lavin/White co-bills have packed audiences in wherever they've played. Audiences get a one-hour shot of each performer during their solo sets, and then a free-for-all when White and Lavin take the stage together and display the kind of chemistry you get from old friends and seasoned performers. "It doesn't sound like a folk concert, it sounds like a comedy concert," says White of his laughter inducing co-bills with Lavin. "We rehearse and we rehearse and then inevitably, she'll throw something at me that I have no idea about, with a mischievous grin that lets me know she's been thinking about it all afternoon. Just to see what will happen. And she's taught me to do the same." "It's hard to describe what it is that Don does onstage, because there simply isn't anyone out there like him," says Lavin. "I'm a brave performer to share the bill with someone who knocks audiences out the way like he does. But I've discovered if audiences know me and don't know him -- they become instant fans of his. If they know him and don't know me, the same thing seems to happen for me. Everybody wins."

Christine Lavin is a multi-award winning singer-songwriter, author, and knitter. She is also a founding member of the popular folk collective, The Four Bitchin' Babes. There is no one-word description for what Don White does. He has survived and thrived for more than twenty years, bringing his audiences to laughter and tears in his live performances, studio recordings, and on the printed page. He is a storyteller-comedian-author-troubadour-folk singer-songwriter. He is a walking challenge to the phrase "file under." Best to just sort him under "Don White." This will be an evening to remember! Advance tickets $20, day of show $25. The show begins at 7:30pm, doors for seating open at 7:00pm.

GIRLS, GUNS & GLORY

For the past 8 years, Boston's rising stars Girls Guns and Glory have been making a name for themselves through relentless touring ( 200 gigs a year worldwide), the release of 4 critically acclaimed records, a slew of local awards, including being the Boston Music Awards first act of its genre to win Act of the Year, and international awards including Independent Artist of the Year at the French Country Music Awards. Their fifth album, Good Luck, was released in February 2014 and focuses on the roots of rock 'n' roll with a twist of country. The foursome (Ward Hayden on vocals/guitar, Paul Dilley on electric and upright bass/piano, Josh Kiggans on drums/percussion, and Chris Hersch on lead guitar/banjo) found inspiration for this record from early '50s rock 'n' roll icons such as Chuck Berry, Eddie Cochran, and Buddy Holly, as well as country greats like Hank Williams and Johnny Cash. • HOT CLUB OF COWTOWN

HOT CLUB OF COWTOWN

Thursday, August 13, 2015, 07:30pm

You might think a band from Austin, Texas with the word "Cowtown" in its name spends its time off from touring herding cattle at a West Texas ranch or maybe in Nashville writing songs about whiskey and loose women. Not this band. "We recently took a band vacation to the Gypsy Festival at St. Maries de la Mer in the South of France," says the band's fiddler and vocalist, Elana James. Whit Smith, Hot Club's guitar player and vocalist, is a regular at the prestigious Djangofest Northwest in Whidbey, Island, Washington, and bass player Jake Erwin has the Hungarian folk band Csokolom in regular rotation on his home stereo. "Our band is fiddle, guitar, and bass, and they can do anything together. We've always played a combination of hot jazz and Western swing," says James, but they can play anything. The impression that the band is in some way a country act, especially in the current climate of American popular music, is somewhat misleading since the Hot Club's influences have always been as much the musette music of the smoky bistros of 1930s Paris as they are the hoedowns and Western swing of the mythic American West. Check them out at hotclubofcowtown.com. The show begins at 7:30 PM. Doors for seating open at 7:00pm. Advance tickets $18. Day of show $22.
